The discovery of coffee: Legend has it that in the 9th century, a young shepherd, Kaldi, who was grazing his goats in the mountains of Abyssinia was surprised by their excitement after they had bitten the seeds of a small shrub. He picked a few handfuls and took them to the monks of a nearby convent. They made a decoction of it, tasted this beverage and appreciated it for its ability to keep them awake during their long nocturnal prayers where until then they had dozed.
