The Cosmopolitan is believed to have been created by various bartenders in the 1970s. John Cain, owner of several well-known bars in San Francisco, later brought the cocktail to San Francisco in 1987. That same year, Toby Cecchini created the recipe that we know today.
The Cosmopolitan quickly became popular throughout the United States. But it was especially in the 90s with the main character of the series Sex & The City, Carrie Bradshaw (played by actress Sarah Jessica Parker), who only drinks this when she goes out with her friends, that this cocktail became very popular.
